Hi! This is my digital sketchbook. I use this space to track my progress, sharing daily studies, sketches, and the random notes I write while figuring things out along the way.

Horse Drawings: Structure, Shape, and Form Practice

On this page, I was focusing solely on drawing the horse with structure in mind. I wasn't focused on accuracy (e.g., trying to copy exactly what I see to make a perfect representation of the reference).

While working with structure in mind and forcing myself to focus only on that, I’d often fall into the trap of switching my mindset back to copying. When that happens, I try to refocus on the structural approach and go back to analyzing the shapes and forms instead. This is different from the type of drawing where you copy a subject using block-ins and tones found in the reference. Drawing with structure requires thinking in terms of shapes, forms, cross-contours, and planes, using those as the elements to find within the reference for analysis and practice.

The hardest part of this process is staying in that structural mindset instead of reverting to copying. I recorded a few of the horses to show how they were drawn alongside their references, which can be found below.

Note: This approach has strong roots in perspective. Manipulating forms in space does make this workout easier because of it. Having strong foundation in perspective, specifically with the box is key aspect for this kind of stuff.
