Bringing the Traditional Sketchbook Into the Digital Space

Heyo!

Welcome to my website, which acts as my personal artistic journal and sketchbook app, as well as a development project. Here, I'll be sharing sketchbook artworks from my creative journey, general thoughts, and other goodies in the future.

The primary goal of this website is to keep me drawing and growing through the sketchbook process and inspire others for doing as well. For ages, the sketchbook has been known as a powerful tool for self-development, deeply rooted in its traditional format. This traditional sketchbook served as the direct source of inspiration for building this digital version, where the core function remains exactly the same, but with the alternative benefits that the digital medium has to offer.

Each sketchbook page I post may have associated notes that reveal the story behind it, such as my thoughts and creative processes. Specific articles focusing on particular topics can be found in the dedicated article section.

The website idea

Over the last couple of years, I transitioned from a traditional sketchbook to a digital one. Thanks to the modern times we live in, the digital medium has become incredibly close to the feel of a traditional sketchbook. Instead of paper, it became the iPad, a digital device I take with me everywhere to draw, take notes, study, and more.

However, I was missing the ability to store my pages on the go in a place that would act like a traditional sketchbook, where I could save, browse, and organize, look through and see some timeline. This was the initial spark that turned into this website, which is still being developed while being actively used and tested. Ultimately, I wanted a place that would act as a true home (Personal Home Page) for my digitally drawn pages, where I could view them and track my progress over time. This missing companion goes hand in hand and makes the perfect combo!

Memorable

A memorable mention should go to the website conceptart.org, which was the first place I landed as a teenager. The website had a forum focused entirely on sketchbooks, where people would post their work, share their journeys, and help each other. It created an incredible atmosphere that I was lucky to find and experience for the period it lasted. I hope this website can trigger some of that same magic as well over time.

Behind the scenes

Miro: Used for initial brainstorming. Below is a screenshot of the board with the first thoughts, analysis, and architectural studying.

Figma: Used to iterate on prototypes and the overall look of the app. The visuals have changed significantly from the initial ideas; the old design and insights can be seen below.

Procreate: Used alongside other drawing apps to sit down, process ideas I wanted to implement, and brainstorm them as small sketches and visual ideations.

This project is still ongoing, with continuous development, where art meets the code and code meets the art :] Have fun!
